Coercion is a use of force, threats or intimidation to obtain compliance. Coercive language can range from: emotional appeals “All we want is a healthy baby, right?”; to not presenting your options accurately “You are not allowed to eat and drink”; to intimidation and threatening “We won’t provide care until you consent to a cervical check”.
➜ You’re the authority of your own body, pregnancy and baby. You, not your provider, choose to allow or not.
➜ Remain in your power by demanding informed discussion about benefits, risks and alternatives without coercion, to make an informed decision.
➜ You can call out your provider’s behaviour and at any time say “I DO NOT CONSENT. I REFUSE further treatment”.
