Cord blood banking

Collecting the baby’s blood (which belongs to the baby) requires premature cord clamping. The blood that remains in the umbilical cord connected to the placenta contains all the elements of blood – red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma, but it’s also rich in stem cells.

➜ Stems cells have the ability to grow into many different kinds of cells like bone marrow cells, blood cells or brain cells.

➜ These stem cells can be used in the treatment of patients with blood and immune system disorders such as leukemia, myelomas, lymphomas, myeloproliferative syndrome, and others.

➜ Your baby’s stem cells can be used in the treatment of family members who have a disease – parents having a 100%, siblings having a 75% and grandparents having a 25% likelihood of being compatible.

➜ Your baby would probably require stem cells from someone else rather than their own stem cells if ever needed.

➜ Your baby’s blood can be stored at a public cord blood bank, private cord blood bank or biobank.
